Vine Farm House and Ropery House

Walking past these houses is a familiar thing to do. Almost everyone in Wivenhoe has done so. They share one attribute, the porticos on their fronts. These showed to passers-by that their occupants were educated people who understood that the porticos showed their social aspirations even if they were not strictly correct by classical standards. One cannot be certain but  people with these tastes probably aspired to minor gentry status. Unfortunately, neither house found its way into James Bettley's revision of the Pevsner guide to Essex. Wivenhoe and the University of Essex

It often happens that the University of Essex is described as being in Colchester. That is actually not correct. The University is situated in Wivenhoe Park: Salary Brook forms the boundary between Wivenhoe and Colchester. That is why the University lies within the Wivenhoe Ward and is part of the Harwich and North Essex Parliamentary constituency. The University is therefore in Wivenhoe.

Road surface problems in Broome Grove

I walk along Broome Grove most mornings to shop at The Cross or on Vine Parade. This stretch of road stretches from just past the school to the junction with Heath Road. It needs re-surfacing now.

The bollards on Vine Parade

Image
If you have ever wondered why there are two bollards on the southern side of  Vine Parade, I am afraid the answer is a sad one. When planning permission was originally given for the parking outside the shops there, it was expected that drivers would park nose to tail. In fact, they parked herring-bone fashion as they still do in the main. Unforunately, in the 1980s, a driver reversing out of the parking area outside what was then the Londis lost control of their car and hit the woman on the opposite pavement: she died as a result of her injuries. Whenever I went up there, her widower reminded me of the need to park as originally intended.
